H. pylori

Since 2010, AICBR has been supporting the University of Alberta and Vuntut Gwitchin First Nation to conduct a Helicobactor pylori (H. pylori) bacteria prevalence study.

The CANHelp Working Group links University of Alberta researchers with northern community leaders and health officials seeking solutions to concerns about health risks from H. pylori infection. They have recently completed a study in Aklavik, NWT. For more information please see their website http://www.canhelpworkinggroup.ca/.

H. pylori is common bacteria found in the stomach, and can lead to stomach irritation, stomach ulcers and cancer. Most people, however, do not have any symptoms. Not everyone who has H. pylori will get sick from it and those who do may not feel sick; those who get sick from it may have the infection for years before it makes them sick. This project has received four years of funding and will be expanded to other communities in the Yukon and the Northwest Territories as requested.
