Diabetes Prevention

Diabetes was identified as a community health priority by the Yukon First Nations Health and Social Commission in 2007 and since then we have sought opportunities to work with others to contribute to preventing diabetes, particularly with Yukon First Nation communities.

The following information emerged from community-based training that was reported in the Yukon First Nation Health Promotion Spring School Report, 2007. (please see Reports & Publications under Our Activities for the full report).

One of the recommendations from this training was for the development of community-based diabetes education materials that could be used by front line health resource workers. In response, dieticians from the First Nations Health Program and Skookum Jim Friendship Centre, along with a certified diabetes educator, the Council of Yukon First Nations and ourselves worked collaboratively produce the DIY: Diabetes Prevention Activities ~ A Manual for Everyone (2008), which is also included in the Reports and Publications section. Some sections of this Manual were incorporated into a diabetes prevention workshop for Vuntut Gwichin First Nation youth in January 2009.

A book chapter describing this project called The Learner Becomes the Teacher: A Community-Based Diabetes Prevention Training Programme for First Nations Health Workers in Northern Canada was subsequently included in the book Diabetes Prevention in Practice (2010), to share the work with others.
