Ethics

An ethical approach that is grounded in the principles of northern First Nations culture is an important aspect of AICBR's approach to research, projects, and people.

In an ongoing effort refine and reinforce its ethical standards, AICBR has been and continues to be involved in efforts and events such as the following:

  • Recently held an ethics workshop to bring together Yukon First Nation communities and others to discuss and build capacity for the meaningful involvement of Yukon First Nations in the ethical review process for health research.
  • Developed in partnership with the Yukon First Nations Health & Social Commission a draft guide booklet "Doing Good Research: A guide for research review in Yukon First Nations communities".
  • Consulted with communities to develop a shared understanding about what the key elements are for the ethical conduct of community-based health research in Yukon.
  • Evaluated ethical health research protocols, including the principles of OCAP for relevance in Yukon, in relation to the new CIHR Guidelines for Health Research.
  • Conducted a literature review to develop the 15 Articles of the CIHR Guidelines for Health Research Involving Aboriginal Peoples using peer-reviewed, primary literature.
  • Participated in Tri-Territorial Ethics meeting in Iqaluit to identify a Northern Ethical Review process; which we accomplished.
