Photovoice
The funding acquired from Yukon Government's Youth Investment Fund was used to hire a youth representative. This person helped in the creative process and production of the social marketing campaign and Photovoice component for the "Working Together to Achieve Healthier Lifestyles in Yukon Communities" project.
When advertising for this position we had two excellent candidates and decided to hire both of them to work on this project. One of the youth was available only for the month of July. The two youth representatives learned about community-based research, Photovoice, practices for youth engagement and ways to advertise to youth. They created a Facebook page and made a presentation to our office about which types of social media would be successful and why. In August, we had one youth representative. This Youth rep was responsible for facilitating the organization of a youth-based art exhibit in Whitehorse, collecting project updates from community project partners, creating newsletters, and maintaining the Facebook page on the Achieving Healthy Weights project.
In August, we hosted a Photovoice project. For the project, the Youth rep arranged the advertising with the local radio station and newspaper; interview process for the Photovoice art project at Bringing Youth to Equality (B.Y.T.E.); and arranged catering from the Boys and Girls Club of Whitehorse. Through advertising, we had six youth participate in the interviews and all six were chosen to take part in the project. The six youth, and the Youth rep worked with a professional photographer and were taught some photography skills. They were asked the questions ' What is healthy?' and 'What is unhealthy?' They walked around Whitehorse taking pictures and were encouraged to be as creative as possible. The youth came back afterwards and met with our Youth rep and the photographer to discuss their pictures and debrief why they were healthy or unhealthy.
The photos and descriptions were on display in the youth gallery at the Yukon Arts Centre for the month of September. The Youth rep invited policy makers, health professionals, health directors, and partners of the Achieving Healthy Weights project to the event.
